Marine Vehicle Design & Analysis Software

Simerics-MP-Marine and Orca3D are easy-to-use marine analysis and design software solutions for naval architects and marine engineers. Bring CFD analysis, hull design, hydrostatics and stability into your own design workflow. Contact Virtura3D to explore software licensing, pricing and a demonstration tailored to your application.

Considering outsourcing a marine analysis? Ask us how accessible software and a streamlined workflow could help your own team perform the analysis in-house.

Simerics-MP-Marine

Simerics-MP-Marine imports STL files from any CAD software and makes fast and easy work of the CFD analyses you may wish to perform on your marine vehicle designs. Old barriers to using CFD analysis have been removed as ease-of-use is so high that any Naval Architect or Marine Engineer can use the software, without training or with a maximum of 1 day of training. Efficiency is very high and the software is typically run on any CAD computer with 32GB of memory, a basic OpenGL graphics card and 16 cores. Accuracy is extremely high and typically within 1% to 5% of physical test results.

Orca3D

Orca3D is a plug-in to Rhino 3D that provides a wealth of easy-to-use tools and assistants for hull design, hydrostatics, advanced stability, compartmentation modeling, load case management, and more. Even if your hulls are designed with CAD software other than Rhino 3D, Orca3D can import them for you to use its rich purpose-built marine design and analysis tools. Ease-of-use is so high that any Naval Architect can use the software without any training. Accuracy is extremely high.

Marine Analysis Capabilities

Simerics-MP-Marine is extremely powerful, accurate, easy-to-use, fast and affordable. It is a CFD-based marine vehicle analysis solution that any Naval Architect or Marine Engineer can use on their CAD workstations without the requirement to be CFD analysis Specialist. Training is often unnecessary, but a ½-day or 1-day course can be purchased.

Users benefit from: highly accelerated design/development times - reduced costs of outsourcing analyses - very large cost savings and time spent on building prototypes and tank or tow testing. Analyses are completed 5 to 15 times faster as compared to competing solutions.

Marine Analysis Results

From loading of the model to starting a simulation takes less than 8 minutes. Results are within 1% to 5% of hydrodynamic tank and tow testing results. Simerics-MP-Marine CFD’s proven analysis toolset, provides significantly more detailed data, insight and visualization of performance metrics than physical testing at a fraction of the cost and in a fraction of the time.

Marine Design

Orca3D is a Rhino plugin, adding marine-specific design and analysis tools to Rhino’s powerful modeling platform. Virtually any type of vessel can be designed with Orca3D - monohulls, multihulls, powerboats, sailboats, workboats, even submarines. If it floats (or sinks), Orca3D can model and analyze it.

You can define sections, adjust control vertices interactively or numerically, and customize how they’re displayed for maximum flexibility. Orca3D generates both visual outputs (like flotation planes and annotated points) and detailed reports, which can be saved as PDFs or Excel files. Hydrostatic and stability data may be exported to .csv or .xml files for your own analyses.

DM8 Composites

For new CFD users like us, Simerics-MP+ for Marine is the perfect package! It provides a smooth and robust CAD to CFD workflow in less than 7 steps along with zero CAD clean up and excellent technical support. We’ve found that Simerics-MP+ for Marine is far superior in terms of speed (with their MPI parallel simulation capabilities) and accuracy with experimental results. Our applications involve resistance/powering, boat maneuvering, etc., which we struggled previously to run with other commonly known CFD tools on the market. With Simerics-MP+, the numerical settings, like mesh size and layout, time step, numerical schemes, etc. are properly set and stored in their marine specified template, which covers almost 100% of our application. These helps up to get the job done in no time.

HSMarine Propulsion

We have been using Simerics-MP+ at HSMarine Propulsion for the past two years. It has proved to be a very streamlined and robust CFD tool to run ship hull and propeller or waterjet simulations. Geometry preparation is easy and comes directly from our usual CAD modeling methods. The meshing is simple, yet flexible enough to model the critical attributes of the simulation. Solutions have proven to be very reliable and accurate. The code is very fast and in many cases geometry to solution takes only a couple of hours. The interface is very intuitive for Naval Architects, using standard terminology, and many of the important attributes of interest (pitch, heave, EHP, etc.) are preprogrammed to be plotted or extracted from the simulations.

This software has enabled us to investigate the details of the flow around the hull, appendages and propellers that provide answers to questions that we have only been able to estimate or answer with empirical information. The ability to simulate the actual operating conditions with all the physics modeled correctly enables us to make better decisions of tradeoffs between design choices and provide better solutions to customers.

Jim Pauling Yacht Design

I think Rhino/Orca3D is a superb package and certainly has put a lot of enjoyment back into the design process. Easy to use, accurate and versatile. The data from our as-built boats concurs extremely well with the design data so we know the accuracy is right on. When we can take measurements off the drawings and compare them to the boats being built and be within a millimetre, it certainly gives us confidence in the software. We do some very complex designs and the accuracy really does astound me sometimes.

We regularly measure and weigh the boats as they float and compare that back to the design and once again the results are very accurate. I can’t really ask for much more than has been delivered with this software and have full confidence in it.
